2021 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Maximum

96 Points Falstaff Magazine

This is a top level reserve Gruner that is one of the world's finest examples. Maximum is sourced from a carefully selected collection of ancient vines aged up to 85 years, that are growing in the historic terraced vineyards of Langenlois. Their yields are extremely low, resulting in exceptionally concentrated grapes. The valuable fruits are harvested late, when they have fully ripened to a golden hue. Before bottling, the wine matures for at least two full winters in traditional acacia barrels on the lees. This gives rise to a dense and mouth-filling Veltliner, pushing the limits of concentration and grape variety to the Maximum. Drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Grand Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.

What The Critics Say

94-96/100 Falstaff, Peter Moser

"Medium yellow green, silver reflections. Delicate herbal savouriness, nuances of yellow stone fruit, a hint of blossom honey, candied orange zest. Complex, juicy, elegant, fine fruit expression, ripe honeydew melon, lingers, white fruit in the aftertaste, already accessible, a multi-faceted food wine."

Winemakers Note

"From 50-85-year-old vines. The fully ripe grapes were selectively hand-harvested in the second half of October in multiple passes and later destemmed and gently crushed. After several hours of maceration, they were gently pressed with low pressure. Fermented in traditional acacia barrels, then aged in the barrel on the lees for two winters. Bottled in August 2023, during high atmospheric pressure and the waxing moon phase. 100% artisanal. Complex, almost ethereal aroma of pine needles and mandarins, accompanied by honey blossoms, pineapple and some white pepper, the mineral vein is distinctly noticeable; concentrated and juicy on the palate, with the finest fruit richness, firm core, delicate exotic notes and smoky spice, leading to a long and mineral finish, fantastic aging potential!"
