2018 Dog Point Marlborough Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc
Grape
Sauvignon Blanc
Its Origins
Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Fantastic bouquet with a complexity and pungency, a varietal signature of ripe grapefruit and fresh herb, there’s a mineral and smokiness then aromas of peach and cape gooseberry, apple and moments of tropical fruits. On the palate a fine satin texture touches first then flavours of gooseberry and citrus, peach and apple, and a distinctive complexity from barrel fermentation and wild ferment aromas of wild flowers. The backbone of acidity deposits flavours and mineral throughout the palate as well as mouthfeel and youthful tension. Well made, Complex and lengthy. In short a delicious wine and excellent SB expression. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2028+."
96/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Intense, oak-matured sauvignon blanc with lemongrass, oyster shell, ginger, spicy oak and nutty yeast lees flavours. Bright, complex and satisfying wine that takes Marlborough sauvignon to a different level. 14 SEP 2023." Drink 2023 - 2027
96/100 Decanter
"Ivan Sutherland and James Healy met at Cloudy Bay then joined forces to found this estate in 2004. Section 94 is from a parcel in the Dog Point Vineyard – the largest organically certified plot in New Zealand. Fruit handpicked, whole-bunch pressed, then fermented and aged with wild yeast in older French oak barrels for 18 months. Bottled without fining. Roger Jones: The nose tells you everything – delicate perfume with crisp white stone fruit, delicate herbaceous notes, clean precise citrus. Classic. Freddy Bulmer: Fairly mellow nose showing some nice development, though still a fresh and vibrant wine. Creamy and smart, lovely texture, good palate weight, delicious sweet spices. Cat Lomax: Hazelnut, savoury toast, hints of spice with a little struck match. Punch, depth, rounded citrus, dried mango, hazelnut. Creamy texture, fresh and lifted." Drink 2024 - 2034
