2018 Domaine Janasse Chateauneuf Chaupin

95 Points Wine Spectator
In stock
A supremely graceful old vine Chateauneuf from Janasse that will drink now or improve for decades. A unique drop from the renowned Sabon Family, this cuvee is composed of 100% Grenache from very old vines (some planted as early as 1912) grown under organic viticulture, mainly in sandy soils on the cool, late-ripening site similarly called Chapouin. Open-knit and expressive, yet elegant and focussed, this is among the finest treasures of Chateauneuf.

Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Spectator

This bursts forth with delicious crushed plum, cherry puree and raspberry coulis notes that stretch out slowly through the lengthy, anise- and black tea–infused finish. Not shy with its fruit, but this has more than enough energy and detail for balance." Drink 2021 - 2038

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinsky

"As usual, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin displays more red fruit than the main bottling, being 100% Grenache from sandier soils. Raspberries and cherries appear on the nose alongside subtle hints of garrigue. The full-bodied palate is almost airy in feel, supported by a latticework of silky tannins and bright acids, while simultaneously adding bass notes of dark chocolate and licorice that linger on the finish. It's an impressive effort." Drink 2022 - 2028

94/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"Another wine that displays the vintage profile, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin reveals a translucent medium ruby color as well as pure Grenache notes of kirsch and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and toasted spice-like aromas and flavors. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. I’m inclined to recommend drinking this in its first decade of life, but I do love its balance and it has ripe tannins, so I expect it will actually evolve gracefully for a solid 15 years or more. It’s a pretty, elegant, classy wine that I would be thrilled to drink."
