2018 Quinta da Fonte Souto Alentejo Red

92 Points James Suckling
In stock
A serious Portuguese red that was recently one of Jancis Robinson's Wines of the Week. This is the top wine from Quinta da Fonte Souto, a winery recently acquired by the Symingtons. An organically managed estate, it continues their commitment to quality and low-intervention viticulture. Packed with complex dark fruits and food-friendly structure, the Fonte Souto a perfect dinner wine, impeccably balanced and built to age for a decade or so. Seriously good wine for the price.

Its Origins

Symington began when Andrew James Symington established himself in Porto in 1882. His subsequent acquisition of three important Port houses Warres, Dows, and Grahams became a legacy passing to his three sons, while many further acquisitions accrued a family portfolio of top quality estates whose practices and reputations have endured until the present day. "The 207-hectare Quinta da Fonte Souto was acquired by the Symington family in 2017 and is their first vineyard outside the Douro. Lying on the slopes of the São Mamede Range at an elevation of 500 metres in the Alentejo subregion of Portalegre, the property benefits from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plain." What The Critics Say

92/100 James Suckling

"Attractive aromas of black cherries and ripe raspberries with cherry chocolate and red licorice. Juicy and tense with medium to full body and polished tannin structure. Refined and sleek. Spiced dark fruit and minerals in the finish. 40% syrah, 30% alicante bouschet, 20% alfrocheiro and 10% old vine field blend. Drink or hold."

92/100 Wine Enthusiast, Roger Voss

"Produced by the Symington family, best known for their Ports and Douro wines, this comes from a new venture in the Portelegre region of Alentejo. The wine is richly structured, elegant and with fine black fruits and tannins. The wine, still young, is full of potential. Drink from 2024."

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Mark Squires

"The 2018 Tinto is a 40/30 blend of Syrah and Alicante Bouschet with 20% Alfrocheiro and the rest a field blend from old vines. It was all aged in an equal mixture of stainless steel and used French oak for eight months. It comes in at 14.3% alcohol. This somewhat understated Tinto certainly speaks of its grape blend, albeit in a subtle fashion, with the Syrah in this wine's youth seeming more in control. There are touches of beef, smooth and unctuous texture, plus power on the finish. It finishes with some brightness as well as that tannic pop. The fruit is very lifted on the finish, but this is not a fruit-forward wine. Rather, the acidity and general structure are the key features here. This is for those who want elegance, not jamminess. Overall, this looks like a perfect food wine, impeccably balanced and built to age for a decade or so. The remaining question is whether it will fulfill that promise. A relatively new winery, this has no real track record. Still, this looks very seriously constructed for a nice price. It's worth leaning up on this today. Drink 2022 - 2031"
