2019 Azelia Barolo Cerretta

In stock
A unique new Azelia label sourced in a very special cru vineyard in Serralunga. Azelia's Scavino family have long wanted to make a Cru Barolo from Cerratta, a south-facing slope of calcerous clay where mass-selected vines were planted 30 years ago. To mark the centenary of the estate, Azelia released this marvelous Cru in 2020 as a top-line label. With beautiful breadth and linear structure, the Cerretta is a serious cellar prospect and highly collectible, being among the first few vintages of this future legend. Get in before it's gone!

Its Origins

Alongside Massolino the barolos from Azelia are eye-watering bargains in the fine wine world. Anyone with a love of the nebbiolo grape should search out these under-valued Barolos for they are some of the most age- worthy wines in the world. In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi's father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo, who bears the name of his grandfather and who represents the fifth generation of wine producers. The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"Cerretta is one of my favorite sites in Serralunga d'Alba because it consists of vines wrapped around a hilltop with various exposures. For that reason, Cerretta wines can vary widely from producer to producer. The Azelia 2019 Barolo Cerretta has dark fruit and spice, but the bouquet is mostly colored by flinty mineral tones, smoke and pencil shaving. It offers terrific balance and also manages some softly perfumed notes of violet and blue flower that you don't get in the other wines. It sees 50 days of extended maceration and 30 months of aging in large oak casks. This is a very limited production of 3,200 bottles. Drink 2025-2045"

95/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli

“This Cerretta blends a graceful nose with a powerful and youthful palate. Sweet violet, restrained red currant, cinnamon candy and a soapy, rose character on the nose lead to a crisp attack with firm, velvety tannins. It’s thick on the finish yet soaked with citrus and leafy flavours. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged for 24 months in botti." Drink 2023 - 2050

94/100 James Suckling

"Perfumed with sliced raspberries, violets and strawberries as well as hints of orange. It’s medium-bodied with firm and fresh tannins that are chewy. Bright acidity. Energetic wine. Drink after 2027."
