2019 Bouchard Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets Clos de la Rougeotte

94 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A beautiful Premier Cru Volnay, from a monopole vineyard exclusive to Bouchard. The Fremiets lies on the mid-slope with a south-east aspect, a site where the presence of iron in the soil creates a slightly more fleshy and structured expression of the otherwise elegant Volnay style. Within this terroir lies the walled vineyard of the Clos de La Rougeotte, named for the Autumn leaves which appear earlier in this cloister than elsewhere. A distinctive expression of Volnay from a superb year, the Clos de la Rougeotte is one to collect.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

92-94/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2019 Volnay Fremiets Clos de la Rougotte 1er Cru is almost a monopole (denied by a few vines belonging to Henri Boillot), although Bouchard Père are the only ones permitted to use the full title. It has a lovely bouquet of cassis-tinged red fruit, floral and well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and a fine bead of acidity. A gentle Volnay with admirable mineralité coming through on the finish. Excellent." Drink 2023 - 2040

91-93/100 RobertParker.com, William Kelley

"The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets Clos de la Rougeotte mingles aromas of cassis and plums with hints of dark chocolate, sweet soil tones and coniferous forest in a complex bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, layered and precise, it's long and mineral, with real elegance and precision."
