2019 Ch. Cafol Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux
Grape
Usually a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon
Its Origins
Chateau Cafol is a quality label produced under the banner of the right bank estate, Château Saint Brice: "Château Saint Brice is located in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region. A new generation of winemakers is now producing exceptional wines under the Saint-Émilion and Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellations. The vineyard of Saint Brice benefits from gravel and clay-limestone soils where our 30 year old vines can flourish. Our main grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are all perfectly adapted to these types of soils and produce excellent quality grapes which allow our winemakers to produce great, unique and authentic wines."
What The Critics Say
VertedeVin Magazine
"The nose is aromatic. It reveals notes of strawberry, black, small notes of chocolate associated with small touches of small juicy black fruits, zan, fresh tobacco as well as discreet hints of camphor, chocolate and a very discreet hint of pepper (in the background). The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers a mineral frame, juiciness, a small tension and a very fine acidulous frame. On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy/acidulous frame, acidulous raspberry, small notes of small black fruits associated with a hint of juicy/crunchy plum as well as hints of violet, liquorice, caramelization, chocolate and almond. Good length. Tannins are structuring."
Winemaker notes on the subsequent 2020 vintage
"Château Cafol is a rich, complex wine made from 30-year-old vines planted on 36 hectares of sand and gravel using sustainable viticulture methods. A deep, intense purple colour, with notes of ripe fruit, black fruit, chocolate, toast and mocha. Traditional vinification with temperature control and ageing for 6 to 8 months in French oak barrels and vats give this wine a unique complexity and finesse."
90/100 James Suckling (2020 vintage)
"Aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants with licorice, black olive and wet earth. Medium-bodied with a juicy, vibrant palate. Supple tannins and a velvety texture with a flavorful finish. 70% merlot and 30% cabernet. Drink or hold."
