2019 Gerard Bertrand Chateau La Soujeole

92 Points James Suckling
In stock
A top red from excellent vineyards in the heart of Southern France. This Estate was owned by nine generations of the same family from 1740. The last direct descendant, Monseigneur Bertrand de la Soujeole, passed on the keys to Gérard Bertrand. Since then he has converted the estate to biodynamic farming, introduced working the land with horses and invested in the vineyards and the winery. From the inland area of Malepere, where this intriguing red is made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Varieties that have crept down from Bordeaux to enjoy a drier and warmer climate. With lush dark fruit and a deep spicy structure, this is compelling and complex.

Its Origins

Wine Enthusiast named his winery Europe’s best in 2011, but Gerard Bertrand began as a rugby player representing France and Narbonne. It wasn’t until the early death of his father that he returned to take the reigns of the family operation, Domaine de Villemajou in Boutenac, Corbieres. He soon identified the potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon to produce rich yet bright, modern wines suited to world market trends and from there began acquiring labels and properties across the region. Balancing an organic and increasingly biodynamic viticulture with an evangelical zeal for exporting his Mediterranean ‘Art de Vivre’, Gerard Bertrand has quickly become one of the most important champions of that which epitomises Southern French wine of today: superb quality in quantity.
