2019 Greystone Waipara Pinot Noir

95 Points Bob Campbell MW

Greystone is a superb example of Waipara Pinot. Made in a winning house style, it is aromatically dense and quite darkly drawn, with supple tannins giving structure to the nicely ripe fruit and herbal/savoury profile. A powerful yet classy Waipara Pinot, it's a hell of a lot of wine for the price. Grab it while the run of good vintages are here.

Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. We planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings we could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Refined and complex, the wine shows dark cherry, dried herb, game and toasted nut characters on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate displaying excellent weight and depth. Wonderfully framed by layers of fine-grained tannins, making it structured and engaging. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2031. April 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex bouquet of pinosty, a sense of place and time, a core of minerality then cherry and red berry fruits laced with spice and lees, English tea and dried herb. Taut and youthful on the palate with core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet, an abundance of fine through coarse-silk tannin mouthfeel, medium + acidity and layers of wood spice and barrel sweetness. Delicious, new, taut and still developing. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2033+." Drink 2023 - 2033

"Elegant, supple pinot noir with floral/red rose, cherry, plum and subtle spicy oak flavours. Charming, vibrant wine with a perfect balance of fruit sweetness and acidity. Accessible now but no rush. " Drink 2023 - 2030
