2019 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Peuilles

A leading single-vineyard red from a natural Cabernet Franc producer in the Loire Valley. Les Peuilles is a special site for this small family operation, a "lieu dit" on a pleateau near the village of Beaumont-En-Véron, where the soils are of flinty clay rather than limestone. The grapes are hand harvested then fermented naturally, after which they spend 6-12 months on traditional large format vessels of old oak and chestnut. With a subtle generosity but plenty of poise and minerality, the Les Peuilles can be drunk on release, or for decades afterwards. What a delight!

Its Origins

Over many decades and five generations, Domaine Olga Raffault has gained cult status as unquestionably one of the benchmark producers for top-quality, traditional Chinon. These are beautifully balanced and complex medium bodied reds. The fruit is elegant and refined with extremely fine tannins, earthy but with plenty of acidity and a mineral edge. They drink wonderfully on release but are also capable of aging for decades. Olga Raffault has a very intriguing history, There are few women who have given their names to estates in the Loire Valley, but Olga Raffault is one of them. She took over the reins of the Domaine under tragic circumstances: She and her husband Pierre had operated this estate together until he died unexpectedly just before harvest in 1947. Without him Olga was left to run the business alone, assisted by Ernest Zenninger, a German prisoner of war who had found refuge and work at Raffault years earlier. According to the family, the "courageous and generous German" did not understand the war and  found meaning through the deep friendship that he wove with his ‘Protectors,’ the Raffault family. In return he made a promise to devote his life to Olga and her two children at the last moments of Pierre Raffault. Ernest became the winemaker at the Domaine and mentored Olga’s son Jean Raffault as he grew up. The two of them ran the estate as a team for decades, under Olga’s watchful eye, until Jean’s daughter Sylvie and her husband Eric de la Vigerie took over in 2000. Raffault has terrific plots of land in the Véron, a strip of land with sandy and gravelly soils where the Vienne River intersects with the much larger Loire. They farm 24 hectares with vines averaging over 30 years in age. Most of it Cabernet Franc with a minuscule one hectare of Chenin Blanc.   Raffault have a very minimalist approach both in the vineyard and the winery. The grapes are always hand-picked, only native yeasts are used, and they choose not to destem the bunches before fermentation begins in stainless steel. The wines are then aged slowly in larger, neutral oak and chestnut - a traditional wood barrel in the region.

What The Critics Say

93/100 view from the cellar, John Gilman

"The 2019 Chinon “les Peuilles” from Domaine Olga Raffault is nicely low octane in this vintage, coming in at a svelte 12.5 percent octane. As I have mentioned in the past, these vines are planted close to the Vienne River on clay and flint soils, with the wine raised for one year in chestnut foudres and a second year in stainless steel prior to bottling. The 2019 les Peuilles offers up a deep and classy nose of black cherries, cassis, tree bark, cigar wrapper, dark soil tones, 25 espresso and plenty of smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core of black fruit, good soil signature and grip, ripe, seamless tannins and fine length and grip on the youthful finish. This will be a lovely wine once it has had a bit of cellaring time to soften up its backend tannins. 2029-2075+."

93/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2018 vintage)

"From the south-facing clayey-siliceous plateaus of the commune of Beaumont-en-Véron in the northwest of the AOP, the 2018 Chinon Les Peuilles opens with a deep, pure, fresh, fine and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and fleshy black and blue berries as well as dark cherries intertwined with floral and spicy as well as earthy/stony and even bloody notes. Discreet (excellent) reduction here. Aged in large foudres for up to 12 months, this is a full-bodied and juicy, silky, refined and elegant Chinon with a delicate acidity and tannin structure and a long, warm and intense finish. The 2018 already drinks very well, but it can also be cellared for 12-16+ years. Tasted in April 2021."

91/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW (2018 vintage)

"This parcel is sheltered by a wood, lending the 2018 Chino Les Peuilles a ripe and fruity style filled with blueberry compote and blackberry flavors. Welcoming and elegant, it offers judiciously extracted, gentle tannins thatnlightly coat the palate with a fine grain. Seductive and appealing, retaining elegance and ease."
