2021 Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Noir

A New Zealand and world icon of Pinot, this is a cultural treasure. The darkish red fruit is lush and steeped in mineral and savoury flavours. On free-draining gravels, these old Martinborough vines produce increasingly refined and powerful wines. As always Martinborough brings notable umami tones like charcuterie, culinary herb and earthy spices. Complex and ethereal yet eminently built to last, this could be decanted for a whole day or, for the real experience, left sealed for a good few years. A Kiwi Grand Cru, collect it now against future price rises.

Its Origins

According to Raymond Chan: "One of New Zealand’s greatest wines, the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir has a breeding that stretches back to the first commercial vintage of 1986. Proprietors Clive Paton, Phyll Pattie and Alison Paton have worked with their winemakers Olly Masters, followed by Helen Masters to ensure the wine is world-class, and the reputation of Ata Rangi Pinot Noir remains impeccable. I feel that as the original vines have matured and newer vineyards come into balance, the wine has made incremental advances that keep it at the forefront of what is made in the country. The style remains truly classical, expressing the variety in all its beauty, while capturing the sinewy power and structure, as well as always exhibiting the regionality of the Martinborough district, and faithfully representing the unique growing conditions of each vintage, often transcending what might be the norm through the strictest fruit selection and most sensitive vinification." Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

99/100 ***** Sam Kim

“This is impeccably composed and seductively expressed, showing dark cherry, clove, thyme and cedar characters on the nose with a gorgeous floral overtone. The concentrated palate is plush yet poised and refined with fleshy texture and perfectly pitched tannins. The wine exhibits stunning depth with layers of delectable flavours and meticulously structured mouthfeel, leading to a totally captivating, sensual finish.”

95-97/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb

"The 2021 Pinot Noir definitely reflects vintage. Its good colour and abundance of gravelly tannins display the smaller berried, smaller vintage. Its bright fruit, intense concentration and plentiful acidity accompany primary red fruit flavour, with an impressive show of ample black tea leaf-like tannins. It’s a wine for the long haul that draws out to an extended finish. Drink 2025-2039 "

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Outstanding. Pristine, fresh, vibrant and youthful, aromas of Doris plums and dark cherry flesh, layers of red clay soil scents and a touch of iron add complexity and depth. The use of oak is judicious and well placed offering some spice and gentle smoky qualities. On the palate, taut textures from tannins and acid backbone deliver a firm palate squeeze, them as the wine begins to open out in glass, the flavours of red fruits and bramble, soft brown baking spices and lees complexities begin to unfold. A wine of energy and power, velvet tannins and saline lick on the finish. A wine for the cellar with best drinking likely from 2027 through 2037+."
