2022 Boneline Waipara Wai-Iti Pinot Noir

A beautiful Pinot from one of Boneline's single vineyards. This label was a favourite at the cellar door, and since its wider release it has become a go-to for our customers as well. It is equal but different to Boneline's more brooding Waimanu label, from Swiss clones. This bottling from the Wai-iti vineyard draws on the brighter and more extroverted expression of plantings that include Dijon clones. Lovingly home-grown and hand-managed by the family, Boneline's Wai-Iti is a distinctive and seriously enjoyable single-vineyard Pinot Noir for this price.

Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and its offerings.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)

"A very youthful, vibrant, varietal and primary fruit scented bouquet. Aromas of dark cherry flesh and black currant, moments of dried herb then a stony mineral quallity. Oak scents layer in spice and a touch of smoke. Equally vibrant and primary on the palate with a firm, taut texture driven by chalky coarse-silk tannins and acidity. Flavours of dark berries and currants laced with barrel spice deliver a wine of texture and flavour. A wine best left in your cellar till at least late 2023 then enjoy through 2030+."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Medium-bodied pinot noir, with an interesting mix of primary fruit (plum, raspberry, cherry) and savoury (fresh herb, spicy oak) flavours. A bright, high-energy wine that can be appreciated now but will develop in bottle. 08 JUL 2019."

92/100 Burghound (2017 vintage)

"A restrained, pure and beautifully elegant nose features shy and cool aromas of essence of red berries that are trimmed in subtle spice wisps. The attractively textured, plush and very rounded medium weight flavors possess plenty of sappy dry extract while offering fine length and very good depth for such a young pinot. While there is just a hint of finishing acid tang, I suspect that a few years of bottle age will cause it to gradually dissipate. Overall, this is very good and should age well too. 92/2025+."
