2020 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Curra

93 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A supreme Barbaresco from one of Bruno Rocca's most prized sites. The Rocca family have been investing time and energy into the Curra vineyard, acquiring holdings and enhancing this Cru label. Like Rabaja, the Curra vineyard faces ideally southwest but at a slightly lower altitude and on lighter soils. The fruit here ripens more sweetly and with less palpable tannins, creating a wonderfully expressive yet elegant companion to the more assertive Rabaja. A vibrant wine with serious aging potential, the deceptively elegant Curra has a rising reputation. Collect!

Its Origins

Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the estate's current property in the 1950‘s when they moved to Rabaja from Barbaresco. Bruno took over the estate when his father died in 1978. As a consummate modernist, Bruno uses modern technology to produce wines with tremendous intensity of fruit balanced by the characteristic Piemontese structure and a judicious use of oak. His wines look, smell and taste like real Nebbiolo and unlike an increasing number of other Piemonte producers, he never feels the need to add a certain extra something to deepen the colour or round out the palate. Bruno started bottling in 1978 and since then has risen to the top of the quality tree in this area, producing a Barbaresco and the single vineyard Rabaja Barbaresco. His daughter, Luisa now works with him at the estate as the marketing manager.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

“The 2020 Barbaresco Currà is classy, elegant and polished. It doesn’t have the volume of the 2019, but instead offers terrific vibrancy and nuance in more understated style. Bottling a few months earlier than in the past works so well, the 2020 retains terrific freshness and verve for a warm year. Hints of spice, macerated cherry, dried flowers and cedar linger on the articulate, persistent finish. This nervy mid-weight Barbaresco has tons to offer." Drink 2024 - 2036

96/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli (2019 vintage)

"Currà is for Bruno Rocca a Barbaresco of delicacy and elegance. The nose is focused on sweet spice and sophisticated Parma violet. The fruit is restrained and multifaceted: strawberry, pomegranate and cherry with a balsamic and earthy depth. Such great silky tannins on the palate, super-refined and sustained by fruit concentration where pomegranate dominates, and a chewy, long, even austere acidity on the finish. It shows great potential while being remarkably sleek."
