This superb Bannockburn wine is our best discovery from Central Otago. The 2020 scored 5 stars from Inside Burgundy alongside Central Otago wines of $100. Owner Steve Davies made wine for Carrick and Akarua before developing his own vineyard. This wine has quality and pedigree to burn, with a place in the offical NZ Fine Wine List and an average Bob Campbell score of almost 96 points (a category where average prices are $80 a bottle). Subtly powerful and refined in the glass, its darkish fruit is finely packed around a supple core of depth, freshness and mineral layering. A big leap over other Central Pinot at the price, drink this now or cellar it a good while.

Its Origins

The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.

"Distinctive, floral, fruity and mineral centric bouquet. Aromas and flavours of dark roses and black cherry flesh, sweetness from new barrel and spices from some smoky wood accentuate the power of this youthful wine. As the wine touches the palate a satin touch shows first then contrasting structure from ripe tannins and medium+ acid line. Fruit flavours expand to include black currant and some plum, then a line of oak re-emerges layering in complexity and depth. Youthful still with time in cellar still needed. Best drinking from 2028 through 2038."
