2021 Duhart Milon Pauillac

94 Points Decanter

En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2024. Located next door to its owner, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Duhart-Milon has for centuries been regarded as Lafite's un-official second wine. But it has also built a reputation as one of the best and a 'model' Pauillac  structured and dense with the toasty and 'sappy' perfume ascribed by tradition to this famous terroir. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2024.

Its Origins

Like much of Pauillac, the estate later known as Duhart-Milon was first put under vine in the early 18th century, at the behest of the ravenously successful Chateau Lafite. Directly adjoining the west edge of today’s Chateau Lafite Rothchild, Duhart-Milon’s vineyards were noted for quality. Early on it had early become effectively Lafite’s ‘second’ wine, and in the 1855 classification it was recognised as the only 4th Growth in Pauillac. By this time it was owned by the Casteja family, under the inherited Chateau name, Duhart-Milon. In 1937 inheritance and ownership issues saw the estate sold, leading to a period of instability and a drop in quality. It wasn’t until 1962 that the Rothschild family were able to buy their neighbour and institute an ambitious plan of vineyard overhaul and development, along with new winemaking facilities in addition to the benefits of Lafite’s knowledge and in-house cooperage. In the decades that followed the vineyard was consolidated from 42 to 71 hectares, and by the time of the great Bordeaux vintages late in the 20th century, Duhart-Milon had regained its rightful place as a great wine among Bordeaux and a model of the Pauillac style.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Decanter, Georgina Hindle

"Tobacco, green pepper, eucalyptus, subtle violet perfume too - black pepper and the crushed stone aspect. Smooth and super silky, this is round with a lovely definition to the fruit, so clean and pure, with an appealing creaminess that comes across as flavour but also texture. The tannins are well integrated, just cushioning the fruit but providing the silky carpet on which they travel from start to finish. This does have a darker core also with a liquorice, sweet tobacco and coffee granule aspect from the Cabernet coming through and settling on the tongue giving a piquance but there's excellent harmony here. Supple and succulent with excellent clarity - really very characterful, I love it. A high percentage of Cabernet in the blend this year, usually between 60-70%." Drink 2026 - 2049

93/100 Jane Anson

"Precise and finessed black fruits here right from the first moments, this is high Cabernet Sauvignon, lovely black savoury fruits that suit the slighly serious feel of Duhart. Expect precision, strict tannins, straight lines, plenty of freshness but without the rusticity that you could find in older Duharts. About 15% press wine after careful extraction and a short maceration. A little more old school Duhart than we have seen over the past few years, but thoroughly enjoyable. 1st year organic conversion, 30hl/h yields." Drink 2028 - 2042

91-93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Duhart-Milon unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, lively and persuasively concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish, it's a classy, serious wine that reflects all the progress this estate has been making over the last decade."
