2020 Elephant Hill Hieronymus Cabernet Merlot

96 Points Cameron Douglas MS

A great vintage for this serious Bordeaux blend. The Hieronymus is a super-premium offering from Hawkes Bay experts Elephant Hill. (Don't be confused, 'Hieronymus' was once a different wine in their range, but the name now applies to their top-level red blend.) Hugely ripe but also focused, this is the cream of the crop and has a delicious future in cellar or decanter. Collect!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

96/100 and "Outstanding" from Cameron Douglas MS

"A Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc led blend with the Franc component speaking first with scents of kalamata olive and fresh thyme, then the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot chime in with ripe and concentrated aromas of black berry and roasted plums, clove and dark cherry. On the palate a dry wine with a core of fruit concentration and fine tannin framing the structure. Acidity layers in the freshness carrying the dark fruit flavours and setting in place the dark spices and wood smoke complexities. Delicious, dry and lengthy. A young wine needing time to develop and harmonise with best drinking from 2028 through 2045+." Drink 2028 - 2045+

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region. Dense, almost chewy wine with chocolate/mocha, cedar, charcuterie and leather flavours. Bordeaux-like red with cellaring potential." Drink 2023 - 2040
