2020 Frontonio La Cerqueta Garnacha

17.5 Points Jancis Robinson MW
In stock
A serious Garnacha from a high altitude vineyard in La Cerqueta, in Spain's Aragon region. These gorgeous 75 year old vines grow on blue and grey slate soils in a Premier Cru-rated vineyard at a cool altitude of 630m above sea level. Under the care of winemaker Fernando Mora MW, the grapes are gently hand picked and foot stomped before fermenation in concrete vats, which ensures the pure fruit flavours are preserved for the wine's 12 month maturation in large format wood. A refined expression of high-altitude Garnacha that is simply named for the estate, the Frontonio Garnacha is a wonderful red to drink now or lay down for a while. Collect!

Its Origins

"Bodegas Frontonio is the personal project of young gun Fernando Mora MW, hailing from the Valdejalón appellation (technically an IGP, not a DO) of Aragón. These scintillating wines are some of the very best being made today east of Rioja and west of Conca, and they’re already garnering effusive praise from both Luis Gutiérrez and Jancis Robinson. Best of all, prices are very fair for the high quality—and the quality begins in the vineyard: Mora and his team own fifty hectares of beautiful old bushvines in rocky clay-limestone selected for high altitude and north-facing exposition to emphasize freshness. And although this is Garnacha country (Aragón, in fact, is thought to be the birthplace of Garnacha), the whites are every bit as fascinating and delicious as the red." Skurnik Wines

What The Critics Say

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Project with Fernando Mora MW and Mario López. Blue-slate soils, high elevation (630 m), vines 75+ years. Foot-stomped, fermented in concrete and aged 12 months in oak foudre. Tasted blind. Light to mid cherry red. Lightly spiced red fruit as it slowly opens in the glass. Lightly peppery. Sweetness of fruit, touch of herbs, harnessed by the dry tannic finesse and a delicate herbal character. Elegant with high-acid sense of energy. I love the dry chalky texture. Pure and very long. Drink 2023-2032"

94/100 RobertParker.com, Luis Gutierrez

"The warmer 2020 produced a 2020 La Cerqueta that keeps the poise and elegance, with moderate alcohol and ripeness, and it has an ethereal profile but feels more Mediterranean and exuberant than the 2021 I tasted next to it. The full clusters fermented with their natural yeasts in concrete with a long maceration (70 days) and matured in oak foudre for 14 months. It's aromatic with notes of thyme, rosemary and lavender, a juicy and textured palate and fine, polished tannins. 2,304 bottles were filled in March 2022." Drink 2023 - 2029
