2020 Hiedler Riesling 1OTW Heiligenstein
Grape
Riesling
Its Origins
From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.
What The Critics Say
95/100 RobertParker.com, Stephan Reinhardt
“The 2020 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is clear and crystalline on the nose yet initially rather discreet in its fruit expression. Intense, ripe apricot aromas emerge form the glass after a while. Crystalline, refined and elegant on the palate this, is a powerful, tight and firmly structured Heiligenstein that is still a bit caged and needs aeration or years to open up, refine and shine. The fruit is stewed and the texture accordingly rich and fleshy, whereas the finish remains crystalline, piquant and precise. This should be another gorgeous Heiligenstein in 10 years but in the Hiedler style. Drink 2030-2045”
93/100 James Suckling
"Very bright yellow-grapefruit, lavender and licorice nose. Concentrated and focused on the medium-bodied palate, the finish very straight and mineral with a hint of positive vegetal character. Drink or hold."
96/100 Wine Enthusiast, Anne Krebiehl MW (2019 vintage)
"A gentle notion of Mandarin peel is all the shy nose reveals, even with lots of swirling. The palate intensifies that Mandarin note and also adds a yeasty, earthy touch but the body is essentially stony, taut, concentrated and sleek. This is beautifully honed and while powerful also incredibly poised. Drink 2025–2050."
