2020 Massolino Barolo Parussi

96 Points Kerin O'Keefe
In stock
Another powerful and impressive Barolo from Massolino. The Parussi Cru vineyard's broad nose of dark fruit, earth and rosewood is beautifully complete and compelling. The ripe tannins and acid may need a little time to integrate, but you can savour this exceptional wine ahead of schedule with a good decant. Still, you'll probably enjoy this experience much more in the knowledge you have some bottles aging as well. Seriously good.

Its Origins

Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Kerin O’Keefe

“From the estate’s vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, the 2020 Parussi shows impressive structure, delivering ripe Marasca cherry, wild strawberry, menthol and licorice flavors supported by firm, tightly knit tannins. Fresh acidity keeps balanced. It’s also fragrant, with balsamic aromas of camphor that mingle with blue flower, ripe dark-skinned, fruit and new leather." Drink 2030 - 2038

95/100 James Suckling

“Vivid red fruit with subtle floral and citrusy notes and hints of crushed stones. Medium-bodied with firm tannins. Structured and focused with a lingering, expanding aftertaste. Impressive density. Try after two to three years."

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

“The 2020 Barolo Parussi is a classy, nuanced wine, Massolino’s sole Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. It shows lovely textural depth and resonance, but in the mid-weight style of the year. Dark red cherry, lavender, rose petal, mint and spice all build nicely, filling out the layers effortlessly. The 2020 is weightless and elegant, with the understated textural depth that is such a signature of this vintage." Drink 2026 - 2040
