Its Origins
Mission Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery. The French Marist Mission was established in Hawkes Bay in 1851, producing table and sacramental wine on its property. The first recorded sale of wine dated to 1870 and Mission Estate remained in production while New Zealand spent more than a century as a very small wine consumer. But as the market exploded late last century their vineyards, infrastructure and traditional knowledge placed them far ahead of the curve on quality wine production. Today they still work hard to remain there, with a commanding portfolio from widely available labels up to top single vineyard wines. Most remarkable perhaps, for fine wine customers, have been the grey-labelled VS series wines, which for years have delivered under $20 Chardonnay, Syrah and other varieties made with reliably impressive attention to quality, harmony and finesse.
What The Critics Say
97/100 and Annual Vintage Selection by Andrew Caillard MW
"Deep Crimson. Classic blackcurrant, dark plum, cedar aromas with some herb garden, violet elements. Grainy textured palate with plentiful blackcurrant, dark plum fruits, fine supple/chalky tannins and well integrated cedar/marzipan oak notes. finishes chocolately firm and minerally, Utterly delicious. Cork. 14% alc." Drink 2025 - 2045
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS
“Made with a blend of the Cabernets and Merlot present a bouquet of complexity and freshness, aromas of violets and new sweet oak, blackberry and dark roasted plums, dried spices and stony soils. There’s definitive pretty side to the bouquet that is both alluring and complex. A smooth texture touches that palate for a brief moment before the firmness and youthful power of tannins and acidity take control. Flavours of plums and violets, tea and blackberry fruits offer contrast and complexity. A firm, dry wine with a delicious core and power, texture and finish. Best drinking from 2027 through 2040.”
95/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke
"Deep, bold purple-red colour with a superb young cabernet-driven bouquet of cassis, mulberry and cedary, toasted-cashew oak. The wine is full-bodied and firmly constituted, with abundant fine-grained tannins which impart a solid grip and add to the wine's terrific length. Concentration, power and panache. Most impressive and its future looks exceedingly bright. 09 OCT 2022." Drink 2024 - 2040
