2020 Rockford Rod and Spur Shiraz Cabernet
Grape
56% Shiraz and 44% Cabernet Sauvignon
Its Origins
"Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive). Ben Radford, whom I first met in South Africa some years ago, has been entrenched as Rocky's right-hand man, and is destined to take over responsibility for winemaking when the time comes for Rocky to step back from an active role." -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
93/100 Huon Hooke
"Deep ruby with a hint of purple in the rim, the bouquet suggests forest floor and briars, especially a eucalyptus forest, including a little mint, while the palate is full bodied and fleshy, supple textured and savoury with ample powdery tannins and excellent balance. There's a lovely core of fruit sweetness. It may have a slightly firmer backbone that usual for this wine." Drink 2024 - 2035
91/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"Blue and black fruit, quite a lot of mint and menthol here, choc-liquorice, some spicy biscuit oak, some beefy almost Vegemite scroll savoury things. Medium-bodied, sweet uptake of black fruit, dried beef and choc-malt with some vanilla perfume, a slurry of Turkish coffee tannin, and a minty blackcurrant finish of good length, albeit kind of desiccated in the tannin department. The Vegemite thing, is, well, a thing here, though I don’t mind that flavour. 56% Shiraz, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon." Drink 2023 - 2028
