Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"A full and generous style that’s fruity and vibrant. Intensely fruited on the palate too, this is a wine for those that like big, upfront fruit. Enjoy it young – it's powerful, but not a wine that will benefit from long ageing, the alcohol is just a touch too high for that. Bold, generous, with a long finish. Amazing finesse of tannins. 5,000 bottles made." Drink 2023 - 2028

94/100 Wine Enthusiast, Ann Lee C. Iijima (2019 vintage)

"Domaine La Soumade devotes its oldest vines from 50-100 years old to this blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Vinified entirely in large-format wood vessels, its black plum and cherry flavors are lusciously concentrated but maintain a zestiness and mineral edge that are thrilling. Full bodied and opulent, it's a velveteen, solidly structured red that should drink beautifully now–2030."

Robert Parker

“The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.”
