2020 Squawking Magpie The Gravels Merlot Malbec Cabernet

92 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A rich and complex Bordeaux-style red from Hawkes Bay. Such great results come from Squawking Magpie's increasingly old vines on the Gimblett Gravels, which produce a red of serious depth and succulence, structure and length. Expertly made with the best of old school values and modern polish, the Gravels blend is solid value.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage

"This wine is deep in colour with a layered fragrant nose of ripe plum and cassis with lifted vanilla, cedar and tobacco notes. The palate has a rich velvet texture with excellent structure, ripe black fruits and cassis flavours with a long full finish. Great cellaring wine for up to 10 years."
