2020 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

From a stunning vintage, and one of the most highly esteemed Cru vineyards in Barolo. The Lazzarito from Vietti offers serious scale and structure. The Lazzarito vineyard's sun-capturing amphitheatre benefits from the local deep, heavy soils of calcerous clay, which impart a serious fruit weight and imposing structure to the wine. Nevertheless, Vietti's nuanced touch manages to deliver this massive concentration with a finesse and polish that will carry it to an extraordinary age, but that won't require long before it is unstoppably delicious. Its Origins

They made wine here back in the 1800s, but it was not until 1919 that Mario Vietti turned the family farm to viticulture and Vietti labels first appeared on the Italian market. The winery grew through the 1950’s, when new export markets opened and Mario’s daughter and son in law Alfredo Currado pioneered what was later to become a defining regional idea - single vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco. Today Vietti remain a towering name, with a portfolio occupying the top tier in most Piedmontese categories - particularly their profoundly important expressions of Cru Barolo. But history will also remember Vietti and Alfredo Currado for something quite different: the survival of the Arneis variety. It was Currado who almost single-handedly revived this hitherto ignored and abused grape and, appreciating its inherent qualities, not only persuaded others but led from the front to create the first, the most beautiful and still the most classic examples of what is now enshrined as the Roero Arneis DOCG.

What The Critics Say

96+/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

“Lazzarito stands out as one of the strongest wines in this portfolio of new releases from Vietti. With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito comes in at a very high threshold in terms of complexity, offering dark cherry, crème de cassis, violet macaron, dried herb and lavender. The wine’s perfumes remind me of the south of France in summer. It shows elegant tannins, streamlined intensity and good acidity. Production is 10,626 bottles." Drink 2026 - 2045

96/100 James Suckling

“There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now if you are willing to embrace austerity, but this should be better from 2027.”
