2021 Astrolabe Kekerengu Albarino
Grape
Albarino
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)
”Fruit centric bouquet with aromas of lemon and apple then whispers of slaty air and blossoms before mineral savoury complexity shows up after a few minutes in glass. Dry and quite intense with a chalky texture, contrasting core of citrus and white fruit flavours, saline and mineral mouthfeel. Lengthy finish with a moment of tangerine and lemon peel. Delicious. Decant for service (yes I mean decant), a large glass and fresh seafood. Best drinking from 2021 through 2024+.” Drink 2021 - 2024+
94/100 Decanter Magazine (2020 vintage)
Restrained, elegant and fresh with layers of complex fruit; citrus and green apple, and smoky, toasty aromas. Clean entry, limpid, powerful mid palate, assertive acidity, lip smacking citrus peel notes, bold long finish.
