2021 Dr Loosen Riesling (DR L) White Cap

90 Points John Caro
In stock
Our biggest selling Riesling, this classic German has beautiful sweetness with balanced mineral acidity and only 8.5% alcohol. Loosen is a renowned Riesling expert and even this entry-level has more harmony and complexity than many wines three times the price. Light bodied but silky-sweet and fresh, this is ridiculously appetising before dinner or with spicy or fatty white meat. Delicious!

Its Origins

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.

What The Critics Say

Wine Enthusiast, Anna Lee C. Iijima (2019 vintage)

"This is a joyously juicy, fruity off-dry Riesling packed with sun-drenched yellow cherry and peach flavors. Fresh with lemon-lime acidity and feather-light on its feet, it's an easy-drinking, revitalizing sip that rewards youthful drinking."

Parker's Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Riesling "Dr L" has a very aromatic, pure, fresh and flinty bouquet with ripe fruit aromas. Round, lush and piquant, this is a light and well-structured Riesling with grip and tension. Very stimulating."

Wine and Spirits Magazine (2015 vintage)

"Spicy and juicy, with lime-pith flavor and slate-like mineral notes, this hits all the marks for a Mosel riesling at a bargain price. Keep a bottle in the fridge for any sort of fish dinners."
