2021 Escarpment Kupe Martinborough Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Over the last 35 years, Escarpment have created Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris wines that are known for a structure and fruit expression that carry accents of theirs sites and their Martinborough region. The ines are now sculpted by Winemaker Tim Bourne and Viticulturist Rowan Hoskins from fruit entirely originating from Martinborough vineyards on the fabled alluvial gravels. The former and original owners of Escarpment — Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby — met by chance in 1998, but seeing that New Zealand had great things to offer the world of Pinot Noir they went into business the same year. Using winemaker Larry McKenna's local knowledge they settled on Martinborough’s alluvial Te Muna terrace, then hardly on the map but now a renowned sub-region. The name chosen was descriptive of the vineyard’s distinctive landscape but also makes reference to the famous limestone escarpment that forms the spine of France’s Burgundy region, from which the wines of Escarpment still draw inspiration.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Intense, dense wine with cassis, blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, mixed spice and nutty oak flavours. Concentrated wine that is beautifully structured making it accessible now but with obvious potential 21 MAR 2023." Drink 2023 - 2035
95/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW
"The 2021 Kupe is a hugely structured Pinot Noir. In 2021, this wine boasts tiny berries, 50% whole bunches, 28 days on skins and 40% new oak, resulting in a not shy tannic grip. It has masses of intensity with silken red cherry and plum fruit that just about manage to pull off the tannins, but it requires time or a steak. While it has massive substance, the fragrance and freshness carry this wine home. Leave on the wine rack until at least 2025. It'll be better for it." Drink 2025 - 2038
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"There’s a definitive complexity and power in the bouquet with a concentration of red berry fruits, dark raspberry and red currant, there’s a mix of dried herb and savoury. A moderate oak influence then floral aromatics and mineral. Taut, dry, warm and youthful, a wine of texture then spice, fruit flavours mirror the bouquet, the oak steps up a little more as the wine becomes more ambient. Tannins have a fine texture, are in abundance layering in mouthfeel and breadth. Acidity adds freshness and length on the palate. Well made, lengthy and youthful. A wine that will age and integrate well offering best drinking from 2025 through 2035."
