2021 Gerard Bertrand L'Hospitalet Grand Vin La Clape
Grape
Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre
Its Origins
Wine Enthusiast named his winery Europe’s best in 2011, but Gerard Bertrand began as a rugby player representing France and Narbonne. It wasn’t until the early death of his father that he returned to take the reigns of the family operation, Domaine de Villemajou in Boutenac, Corbieres. He soon identified the potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon to produce rich yet bright, modern wines suited to world market trends and from there began acquiring labels and properties across the region. Balancing an organic and increasingly biodynamic viticulture with an evangelical zeal for exporting his Mediterranean ‘Art de Vivre’, Gerard Bertrand has quickly become one of the most important champions of that which epitomises Southern French wine of today: superb quality in quantity.
What The Critics Say
92/100 James Suckling
"Dark berries, licorice, dried thyme and baking spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Velvety texture at the center with loads of cherries and berries mingling throughout. Well-balanced with a flavorful finish. Syrah, grenache noir and mourvedre. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."
91/100 Decanter, Natalie Earl
"Ripe and rich and appealing fruit on the nose - blackberry, bramble, black cherry. A sweet and pretty profile, almost strawberry-like. It's juicy, succulent, the fruit is ripe and sweet and yummy. Yes there's some sweet vanilla oak but it's well done, integrated, and it adds complexity. Toasty and vanilla. Tannins are still a little tight. But it's a well-balanced wine. Should age well in the medium term due to it's fresh acidity. Dense, silky and sweet, classy." Drink 2023 - 2029
Winemakers Note
"The finest wine of the Estate. The harvest date is determined by regular ripeness checks, polyphenol analysis analysis of the polyphenols contained in the grape skins, and daily polyphenols in the grape skins, and daily tastings of the grapes as harvest approaches. The grapes are harvested by hand to the winery within the hour. The grapes are then destemmed before being placed in temperature-controlled vats. Each grape variety is vinified separately. Maceration lasts between 20 and 25 days. days. At the end of winter, the wines are transferred to new barrels 225-liter barrels for between 12 and 16 months, in the magnificent l'Hospitalet winery (2,000 barrels). The fine lees are stirred periodically. The best barrels of each grape variety selected and blended to produce this cuvée. The intense nose is dominated dominated by aromas of spices and red fruit fruit. On the palate, silky, fine tannins tannins underline the wine's fruity freshness. Serve with Lamb Rack, game or mature cheese."
