2021 Glaetzer Barossa Valley Wallace Shiraz/Grenache

92 Points Parker's Wine Advocate

Another supreme old vine Glaetzer wine, this time a mere 50 and 100 years of age. The richness and spice of Barossa Shiraz leads, rounded out with succulent, full-bodied Grenache. Massive yet polished and so balanced, this modern Aussie style shows exactly why Glaetzer's name is bandied around so much. Wallace is the Scottish ancestral name of the family. This is reflected in the Celtic cross, thistle and the Celtic knot pattern. So satisfying in the glass!

Its Origins

Ben Glaetzer is part of the exciting new generation of Barossa winemakers, but his family first settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Germany.  The Glaetzer's were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the region. He took over the family winery in 2002 and from then the style change has been huge. His ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with modern flair and a drive for excellence, produces wines that are unmistakably Barrosa, but with a purity and a class almost unmatched at this price point.   It all starts with some of the highest quality old vine fruit available anywhere in the world. This is all taken from the renowned Ebenezer sub-region in the northern Barossa Valley,  The ancient dry-grown vineyards in the small Ebenezer district, are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage, and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. This exceptional fruit sourced from a loyal group of third and fourth generation growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines.   The most incredible examples are sourced from 80-130 year old, non-grafted bush vines which are extremely low yielding. The ancient vines require minimal attention as their deep root structure means they are self-sufficient, and adaptable to climatic extremes. Ebenezer has a unique soil profile. The well-drained sandy clay loam over a solid limestone pan is perfect for growing Shiraz. The soil is 'mean' and encourages deep roots which helps produce hugely concentrated wines of great character.

What The Critics Say

92/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin

"The 2021 Wallace Shiraz Grenache pours a vibrant, refulgent fuchsia in the glass. The Grenache lends it all the raspberry jubes and spice, while the Shiraz gives it plumpness and presence. Really delicious, glossy, silky fruit is supported by a river of the same flowing tannins. Epic value for money. This is fresher, finer and more alive than the 2020 offering. Lovely stuff! 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2023 - 2030

92/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"A blend of northern Barossa shiraz/grenache. Deep crimson in hue with vibrant aromas of frangipani-flecked dark plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruits underscored with baking spices, rose petals, roasting meats, cola, ginger spice and earth. Bright acidity, a plume of red cherry and wild strawberry join the party on the palate, with fine sandy tannin and black tea and pure dark and red berry fruits on the exit." Drink 2023 - 2032
