Its Origins
Once a trading village established in 1842, this remarkable place is a captivating pocket of Australia’s wine and vine history that is a must when visiting the Barossa. Owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa spans six-generations of farming, food, community and wine, Langmeil is renowned for its preservation of old vines and the making of distinguished wines from these cherished sites. At the pinnacle of its winemaking is The Freedom 1843 Shiraz, made from what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard believed planted in 1843 at the heart of this historical patch of Barossa earth.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes
"A strong release of the Orphan Bank Shiraz from the most excellent 2021 vintage in the Barossa. Deeply coloured with gorgeous aromas of macerated satsuma plums, blueberry, boysenberry and dark cherry fruits. Hints of baking spice, dark chocolate, light espresso notes, violets, licorice, panforte and earth. It's all about harmony, fruit density and flow here, tight, compact sandy tannins providing the base and a finish that lingers nicely with an array of dark plum fruits and spice." Drink 2023 - 2035
95/100 Huon Hooke
"Bright red-purple colour, deep and concentrated; the bouquet is all pepper and dried spices, earthy/forest-floor scents and dried bayleaf. Toasty oak. Colossal pepper/spice and dried herb flavours that endure very long on the after-palate. Decadent stuff. 04 Dec 2023." Drink 2024 - 2041
