2021 Montlandrie Cotes de Castillon

93 Points James Suckling
In stock

A great addition to the range from Durantou, which was purchased and developed by the family since 2009. Montlandrie is drawn from a single block grown on a high plateau much like the prized terroir in St Emilion. Considered a star of the rising Cotes de Castillon appellation, the Montlandrie is fantastic drinking at this price.

Its Origins

Montlandrie was purchased in 2009 by Denis Durantou, the owner of Chateau LEglise Clinet in Pomerol, Chateau Montlandrie dates back to the late 1800s when the Right Bank property was founded by an Italian family. Chateau Montlandrie stands out due to the ancient stone tower located in the middle of the vineyards. Chateau Montlandrie is the first purchase in the Cotes de Bordeaux appellation by Denis Durantou. Aside from his famous Pomerol property, he also owns vines in St. Emilion with Chateau Saintayme and in Lalande de Pomerol with Chateau Les Cruzelles and Chateau Chenade. (Wine Cellar Insider)

What The Critics Say

92-93/100 James Suckling

"Perfumed and vibrant already, with a ripe, textured and creamy tannin frame. Pretty blue and purple fruit. Juicy finish. Salty. 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon."

91-93/100 Thomas Parker MW

"The 2021 is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picked betewen 30th September and 8th October, there will be roughly 3,500 cases made at 14% abv, raised in 50% new French oak. Deep ruby in colour. Full of ripe red fruit, iron and bonfired smoke on the nose. The palate is fine and fruit forward, with a lighter touch than in recent vintages. It is still intense, but the tannins have been further refined, to make a more athletic profile for this wine. Bright berry fruit and cherry blossom linger together with hints of graphite and iron. Powdery tannins linger together with the fruit on the finish, but this should drink well from a fairly early stage."

92/100 Jane Anson

"Kicks off with the knife-edge austerity of limestone, with a delicate frame and oyster shell salinity, opening to peony floral aromatics and gentle raspberry fruits. Tight overall in its construction, needs to soften over ageing. 50% new oak, harvest September 30 to October 7."
