Its Origins
Mount Edward is a small winery located in the heart of the Gibbston grape growing district, 25 km from Queenstown, in Central Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1997, the winery was started by one of the pioneers of Central Otago wine, Alan Brady. Originally started as a small personal project Mount Edward has evolved from its humble beginnings as a stand alone Pinot Noir and Riesling producer. Today the winery has vineyards in the best sub regions of Central Otago, producing wines across a number of varieties and styles. Since 2004, winemaker Duncan Forsyth and proprietor John Buchanan, have focused Mount Edward on growing small batch premium single vineyard wines that reflect site and season. As part of this, all estate vineyards, and the winery itself, are certified organically.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2021 vintage
"The 2021 Pinot Noir has a dense yet lush texture, plenty of fruit power, is concentrated yet finely balanced, all with good acidity, fine tannins and superb long finish . Vinified using open fermenters, hand plunging, natural yeasts and 11 months in 15% new French oak. Racked, blended and settled in tank for a further 6 months. Fermentation was carried out using de-stemmed fruit including the addition of 25% whole bunches.. Perfumed with lovely aromatics, there is a range of complexed darker berry fruit notes, some spice, savoury tones and dried herbs. Organically grown, made and certified, a blend of our best vineyard parcels." Drink 2022 - 2035
95/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie (2020 vintage)
"Silky then in comes the graphite-minerally grip. Like that. First big message is the perfume, bluberry/mulberry fruited but lighter on, a bit of lavender, sage, fennel and more of the graphite minerally stuff. The palate tense and cool, sheets of fruit, spice, stony qualities. Long too, unfurling into the distance with a kind of luxurious sense. Refreshment with each sip. Really beautiful. Finesse."
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2019 vintage)
"Gorgeously styled and refined, the wine shows ripe cherry, smoked game, mushroom and toasted nut characters on the nose. The palate delivers terrific weight and flow, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and fine polished tannins. Beautifully supple and plush with excellent structure and length. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2034."
