Its Origins

Saintayme in St. Emilion is the property of Denis Durantou, best known for his famous Pomerol estate, Chateau L’Eglise Clinet. Durantou has expanded his holdings in the Right Bank over the past years to include not only Saintayme, but two estates in Lalande de Pomerol, Chateau Cruzelles and Chateau La Chenade, as well as Montlandrie in the Cotes de Bordeaux appellation. The vineyard of Saintayme is located in the increasingly popular commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse, the cooler soils of which are also home to Valandraud and Chateau Fleur Cardinale. The vines are in one single plot of limestone, clay and gravel that is planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The average vine density is 6,000 vines per hectare, and the vines themselves are close to 35 years of age.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Decanter, Georgina Hindle

“Ripe, perfumed nose. Bright, almost sour cherry and strawberry fruit on the palate, seriously searing, with such fresh acidities - a sharp direction upwards that quickly gets enveloped by slate minerality and such exacting graphite touches on the palate that sweep the tongue, and leave a real iodine flavour on the finish. I love the nature of this, no frills, really showing the terroir in the glass and such clarity of the elements. Linear and focused. 60,000 bottle production. Ageing 30% in new oak." Drink 2024 - 2032

92/100 Jane Anson

“Beautiful juice here, cool, measured, reserved, precise blue fruit and gunsmoke reduction, with sinew and just a touch of swagger. Harvest September 28 to October 11."

89-92/100 Thomas Parker MW

"The 2021 is 100% Merlot as always, harvested from 28th September to 11th October. Total production will be 5,000 cases at 13.5% abv, with 30% matured in new French oak barrels. Bright ruby colour. Very fragrant, with cherry blossom and sweeter juicy plums. Super airy and lifted on the palate, this is a juicy, moreish and approachable wine. There is a little chalk and grip for now, but this should integrate nicely through elevage and make this delicious in the mid term. Cedar and fresh red berries linger on the finish."
