2022 Squawking Magpie The Gravels Chardonnay

93 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A special price on this serious Chardonnay from the Hawkes Bay stalwarts, Squawking Magpie. Previously, this label was selected in the top 12 Hawkes Bay Chardonnays from 2020 by Cameron Douglas, scoring a huge 96/100. Although named for Squawking Magpie's spiritual home, on the Gimblett Gravels, this label was sourced from vines on select alluvial soils out west of Hastings. Here the wine acquires a little minerality but a lot of nice ripeness, resulting in a poised Chardonnay that is rounded by delicate oak and butterscotch tones. A really satisfying and complete Hawkes Bay Chardonnay, the Gravels is a super steal at this price.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)

"The bouquet is captivating and complex, a wine that speaks of place and time. There's a core of fruit that is plush, ripe and alluring, almost beguiling with scents of yellow stone fruits, apple and citrus peel and a smidgin of pith. On the palate the core fruit flavours are surrounded by wood and some fruit tannins, acidity is pristine, fresh adding vibrato and highlighting some natural baking spice qualities from the fruit and oak. As the wine relaxes and warms in the glass, more layers of complexity emerge. A fascinating wine, still rather youthful, very lengthy and delicious. Excellent potential, fantastic value. Best drinking from mid to late 2022 through 2030. 96 Points, Outstanding"

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Accessible, fruity chardonnay with peach, nectarine, lime, citrus, vanilla bean, ginger and spicy oak flavours. Soft-textured, inviting wine with development potential. 01 SEP 2022." Drink 2022 - 2028
