2022 Valli Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir

96 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A superbly elegant and savoury Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir from the expert, Grant Taylor. This wine is one of the finest expression of this famously cooler subregion, where a long-ripening period allows the development of more complex, subtle and savoury fruit flavours. Valli draws from great sources, here an older vineyard which was the first in the region to be planted in north-south rows, maximising fruit exposure to the sunlight. Finely extracted though packed with depth and dimension, this is Central Otago Pinot at its best. Drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

Valli is the personal vocation of pioneering Otago winemaker, Grant Taylor. Grant’s name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been crafting wines in the region since 1993 when there were only 20 hectares planted - today there are over 1700. Grant’s accomplishments are well known in the wine world and he is credited with winning the Best Pinot Noir Trophy at a major International Wine Competition in London an unprecedented four times – a feat achieved by no other winemaker in the world. During the past 19 years he has made the first wines for a number of iconic Otago wineries, but now the serious focus is on his own creation, Valli. Established in 1998 and named after his Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from and Italian winemaking background, Grant founded Valli with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex and enticing bouquet filled with scents of ripe red stone fruits and site, layers of spice and barrel smoke. The mineral earthy quality shows a seam of crumbled schist and stone then a fine lees complexity. Delicious, taut, dry and with a core of red stone fruits and raspberry along with some black currant reflect the bouquet adding depth and complexity. Lengthy balanced and well made with best drinking from 2026 through 2036." Drink 2026 - 2036

96/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Moderately deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented, with a whiff of medicinal/ herbaceous nuance, unfolding Bing cherry, strawberry, raspberry, hibiscus, vanilla and spices. Medium-bodied aromas of strawberry, cherry and raspberry intertwined with hibiscus, vanilla, and cinnamon, along with thyme, vine leaf and a suggestion of liquorice. Ripe acidity laces the palate, and dusty tannin lightly adorns and carries a captivating closing. A graceful Pinot Noir shows deep nuances and balanced spice on a refined, dusty mouthfeel. Match with roasted pigeon and char-grilled pork neck over the next 12+ years. Fruit from Gibbston Highway & Gibbston Back Rd, fermented with 25% whole bunch, aged 11 months in French oak, 30% new oak. 14% new oak. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) Nov 2023 RRP $85." Drink 2023 - 2035+

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Taut, elegant pinot noir with a mix of dark cherry, floral/rose petal/violet, savoury/baked earth and spicy oak flavours. From a top Gibbston vineyard. A wine with energy and age-ability. 15 NOV 2023." Drink 2023 - 2029
