2022 Astrolabe Spatlese Riesling

92 Points James Suckling
In stock
A gorgeous Marlborough Riesling in the sweeter German style. Astrolabe winemaker Simon Waghorn is an expert in white varietals and a lover of German "Spatlese" style. This superb fruit came from the family's own home vineyard, half of which was hand harvested and pressed in whole bunches. Only free run juice went into this short fermentation, which was stopped early when it attained a perfect balance between fresh acidity and citrussy sherbert sweetness. Light-bodied and effortlessly enjoyable, the Astrolabe Spatlese is a joy to drink now or cellar!

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

92/100 James Suckling

“A perfumed nose of red and green apples, wet stone, thyme and moss. Medium-bodied and sweet. There is a mineral and herbal character to the palate that plays nicely with the sweetness. Composed and charming.”

91/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb

“The 2021 Grovetown Spätlese is a gorgeous, medium-sweet Riesling that has loads of juicy nectarine and citrus flavors and plenty of mouthwatering acidity to cut through that sweetness, making for a rather joyful, skip-along Riesling. It’s clean, pure and has delightful clarity as well as 8.5% alcohol. Cook me up some roast pork and do away with the apple sauce; this Riesling would make the perfect Sunday lunch pairing. Drinking window 2022-2028.”

94/100 Cameron Douglas (2020 Vintage)

"Ripe fruited and highly scented bouquet with aromas of green apples and roses, honeysuckle and sweet apricot flesh with a flinty mineral core. Equally complex and exotic on the palate with plenty of sweetness contrasted by high-toned electric acidity carrying all the richness and flavour. As the sweetness subsides flavours of apples and white flesh stone fruits, an abundance of lemon and roses return. Long finish, balanced and well made. Delicious with gently spiced fare or just on its own. Drink upon purchase and through 2030."
