2022 Bernard Fouquet Aubuisieres Vouvray Cuvee Gerald (Demi-Sec)

A new arrival to complement the Silex, this is a gorgeous off-dry Chenin Vouvray from the experts. The wine is made from a parcel of sixty-plus year old chenin vines on a combination of clay and flint soils. Previously known as 'Les Girardieres', this demi-sec white offers a beautifully defined sweetness and gentle opulence, while revealing layers of fresh acidity and mineral nuance. In a unique and undervalued style, this special wine is perfect by itself or with spicy/fatty food (think South East Asia). Very popular with the few who know it.

Chenin Blanc

Its Origins

After gaining experience in Alsace and Burgundy, Bernard Fouquet established his own winery in 1982 in the Loire, focussed on the Chenin Blanc grape. He soon created a trial and error knowledge of his terroir and by the mid-late 1990s, when Vouvray had a series of stellar vintages, Fouquet wines were among the foremost in the world market for the price. With an emphasis on purity and use of stainless steel, Fouquet aims to capture his respective terroir characteristic in each style: mainly calcareous clay in his dry and dessert wines, mainly flint/silica in his demi-sec and sparkling wines. Today Fouquet’s labels remain inexpensive but are considered to be among Vouvray’s best at any price.

What The Critics Say

93/100 John Gillman (2018 Vintage)

"The 2018 les Girardieres from Monsieur Fouquet is bottled as a Demi Sec, but it does not state so on either the front or back labels. The wine is made from a parcel of sixty-plus year old chenin vines on a combination of clay and flint soils. The wine is sealed under screwcap, but was nonetheless singing when I opened it, revealing scents of quince, apple, a beautiful base of flinty soil tones, spring flowers, a touch of lanolin and a lovely top note of bee pollen. On the palate the wine is deep, pure, focused and full-bodied, with a superb core of fruit, bright, zesty acids and excellent balance and grip on the long, complex and very classy finish. A superb bottle of Demi-Sec! Drink 2020-2050+."

90/100 Wine Advocate, David Schildknecht (2009 vintage)

"Narcissus, candied lime, grapefruit, and blood orange rinds memorably scent the Aubuisieres 2009 Vouvray Cuvee Les Girardieres, then go on to inform a nut oil- and honey-infused, bittersweetly zesty palate subtly oily in texture. This finishes with fruit pip and citrus rind bitterness, as well as alkaline and savory, saline minerality."
