2022 Blackenbrook Nelson Pinot Blanc

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
In stock
A beautiful Pinot Blanc from this boutique producer in Nelson. This label won the trophy for "Best Other White" in the NZ International Wine Competition in 2020. Blackenbrook are famous for their aromatic wines, and this fruit-foward, steel fermented offering is similar but deliciously different from their rendition of the grape's close cousin, Pinot Gris. A wonderfully accessible example of a variety that is very rare in New Zealand, the Blackenbrook is a must-try.

Its Origins

Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway. The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Cameron Douglas MW

"Aromas and flavours of sweet citrus and green pears, apples and mandarin. There’s a fine satin texture with core fruit flavours that mirror the bouquet, a contrasting acid line and generous plush mouthfeel. Overall a balanced well made wine with a lovely texture and finish. Best drinking from 2023 through 2029."

"The fleshy 2022 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown and hand-picked at Tasman. Mostly tank-fermented and lees-aged (5 per cent of the blend was handled in old oak barrels), it is attractively scented and mouthfilling, with strong, vibrant peach and pear flavours, gentle spicy notes, fractional sweetness (8 grams/litre of residual sugar) and a smooth finish. Offering very easy drinking, it's a drink now or cellaring proposition."
