2022 Bouchard Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres

96 Points Jasper Morris MW
In stock
A truly great Chardonnay from Meursault's lauded 'Genevrieres' vineyard. As Meursault has no Grand Crus, Premier Cru wines like this are the ultimate and definitive expression of the famous style. The soil here is lime and clayish gravel with some iron, allowing a beautiful balance of stony drainage and water holding for fruit lushness. While it is relatively warm and ripe, such austere soils produce high fruit quality with depth and mineral complexity. A rounded and complete expression of great Chardonnay terroir, and very good value for the price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

94-96/100 Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris MW

"The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040."

94-95/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott

"Still very youthful. Stacks of yellow fruits with a hint of butterscotch, but this is anything other than loud. Very impressive concentration and a wonderful balance of stony and creamy elements. Long, complete finish with underlying tannic power. Bouchard is the owner of two parcels of Genevrières that total 2.65 ha: 1.65ha on the thin soils of the steeper part of the slope that gives a more mineral result, and another hectare below that in deeper soils. The combination produces a classic Meursault."

94/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW

"This classic expression of Genevrières has all the richness and buttery notes that a traditional Meursault lover will appreciate. Still, there is a complexity to the fruit aromas as well, with notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, and citrus peel. Despite the broad density on the palate, a lively acidity brings everything into balance and finishes very long on the palate. The grapes are from two parcels in Genevrières, and another in Dessous; more than a hectare of the Bouchard vines here had to be grubbed up due to issues with the 161-49 rootstock."
