2022 Bouchard Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets 'Ancienne Cuvée Carnot'
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW
"The parcel of Volnay Caillerets was the first Pinot picked in 2022 due to the thin soils and superficial nature of the limestone. The wine has an alluring aroma of blackberry and mulberry fruit with hints of boxwood, bay leaf, and peonies. The texture is supple and velvety, with rewarding concentration and density. The team at Bouchard sorts rigorously for ‘figuée’, grapes shrivelled by sunburn; technical director Frédéric Weber says success depends on ‘keeping it crunchy’. This wine should open soon after release and is suited to mid-term cellaring, although a 1962 from this vineyard tasted this year was still fresh." Drink 2025 - 2050
94-95/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott
"Very fragrant and floral, but with a deep well of ripe red fruits behind it. Excellent interplay of structured tannins and fruit on the quite firm medium-bodied palate. From a 3.5 hectare plot in this east-facing and rocky Volnay 1er Cru that was picked early to prevent overripeness."
92-94/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, William Kelley
"The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is showing especially well, bursting with aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with spices, rose petals and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, it’s pure and ethereal, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish."
