2022 Ch. Meyney St Estephe En Primeur

95 Points Jane Anson
In stock

En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2025. This is a classic St Estephe and exceptional value for the price. Rather like a top estate, it is sourced from the property's own single block – in which a relatively high proportion of Petit Verdot provides extra aged complexities of musk and leather. Thanks to ambitious investment and ownership, this wine benefits from up to date equipment such as optical grape sorting under the expert eye of winemaking consultant Hubert de Bouärd. This is a succulent and serious Cabernet-led Bordeaux to decant on arrival or age further in cellar. Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST. With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.

$75.00 per bottle

Grape

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and a decent amount of Petit Verdot

Its Origins

The 51 hectare Left Bank, Bordeaux vineyard of Chateau Meyney is one large, single plot, which is unusual for such a big vineyard. Situated close to Chateau Montrose and not far from Chateau Phelan Segur, the gravel and sand based terroir of Chateau Meyney has a large streak of blue clay close to three meters thick, that resides underneath the gravel and sand, top soil. The vineyard of Chateau Meyney is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Those vines represent a change in the Chateau Meyney vineyard. Previously, there was some Cabernet Franc planted in their Medoc vineyard. Those vines were removed and more Merlot was added to the vineyard in its place. The vineyard is planted to a vine density of 9,000 vines per hectare. The vines are on between 35 and 40 years old. However, they old vines that are close to 100 years of age. To produce the wine of Chateau Meyney, vinification takes place in traditional, temperature controlled, cement vats that vary in size. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat. The wine is aged in 60% new, French oak barrels for between 18 and 24 months

What The Critics Say

95/100 Jane Anson

“The insider's St-Estephe. A vineyard that should perform strongly in this kind of vintage, because located right next to the river for air conditioning (between Montrose and Calon-Segur), with a mix of gravel with clear clay sections to retain freshness, and it's definitely one to look out for. Layers of redcurrant, raspberry and blackcurrant fruits, juicy mouthwatering finish, peony, pencil lead, orange peel, 3.75ph. Certainly this is a great example of Meyney. Hubert de Boüard consultant. A buy.”

94-95/100 James Suckling

“Impressive concentration here with compact tannin structure. Medium- to full-bodied. Firm and steady with a long, velvety finish. Minerally and crunchy.”

92-94/100 Falstaff, Perter Moser

“Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Black forest berries, blackberries and liquorice, tobacco spice, some nougat. Full-bodied, round and complex, dark nougat, supporting tannins, good length, chocolatey mineral finish.”
