2022 Durvillea Marlborough Chardonnay
Grape
Chardonnay
Its Origins
Astrolabe winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage
"A full-bodied, creamy and oaky chardonnay made in a round, mouth-filling style. COLOUR/APPEARANCE: Pale straw. AROMA/BOUQUET: Complex citrus fruit, hazelnut meal, crème caramel and sweet oak vanillin. PALATE: Full-bodied, with nectarine, honeydew melon, fine oak and a long ripe citrus finish. FOOD PAIRING: Roasted hazelnuts, creamy pasta and poultry dishes, smoked salmon and miso-glazed eggplant with toasted sesame seeds."
92/100 Cameron Douglas (2020 vintage)
”White peach and apple, vanilla and soft raw cashew nut, mild sweet oak scents and a fresh fruity drive. Soft and silty on the palate with flavours of peaches and tree fruits, a touch of grapefuit and pith then mild flavours of oak, nut and baking spice. Very fine wood tannins and crisp acidity. A balanced and well made wine for any occasion. "
