2022 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Cap (375 ml)

97 Points James Suckling
In stock
A small bottle of this ultra-classy, luscious and flavour-packed dessert Riesling. This is a super-sweet style but with a thread of racy acidity keeping everything fresh. Juffer-Sonnenuhr is one of the most narrowly defined Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) sites in Germany. It's the steepest and most south-facing area of the larger Juffer vineyard, and produces wines with tremendous purity and concentration. This has great cellaring potential, but it's very hard to resist now!

Its Origins

The Haag family has been in wine for just a little while - since 1605, to be precise - and over that time they have been instrumental in the development of Brauneberger, an area that has been recognised as one of the Mosel’s best since the sixth century. At the helm today is the youthful Oliver Haag, whose father Wilhelm (son of Fritz) became recognised as a Riesling world leader, awarded the deceptively simple title of Winegrower of the Year in 1994. Oliver himself has at his back a full oenological training as well as extensive experience with a number of leading Riesling producers. With results so superb they effectively define a modern classic style of Mosel Riesling, it seems clear that the Haag family’s future in wine may be as sure as it’s past.

What The Critics Say

97/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott

“The interplay of concentrated exotic fruit aromas (what a wide spectrum of them there are!) and the cool wet stone minerality of this succulent Auslese is a beauty to behold. Stunning vitality at the uplifting finish although the acidity is not high in the Mosel context. This has great potential, but you could certainly drink it right away if you want maximum freshness. Drink or hold.”

96/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Anne Kriebiehl MW

"The 2022 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel is made from fruit with 30-40% botrytis-affected grapes. Haag notes that this was exquisitely clean botrytis, and the purity of candied lime and lemon peel on the nose, with aromatic passion fruit trailing overhead, proves it. The palate is viscous, very concentrated, super sweet, yet absolutely countered by acidity. Vivid tropicality on a most delicious knife's edge. The finish is very long, intense and supremely aromatic. Approx. 125g/L of residual sweetness. (Luscious) Drink 2025-2060"
