96 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
From very old vines up to 130 years, this stellar Shiraz from Ben Glaetzer is about quality over quantity. With boatloads of flavour but nothing heavy, the wine's incredible depth of lush fruit and spice is nested in a perfectly balanced and supple palate. It's sumptuous now but it will continue to age for decades. Hard to imagine a better example of this modern Aussie style.

Its Origins

Ben Glaetzer makes unique, elegant wines with minimal intervention, which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa. His ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in the style of all wines under the Glaetzer label. All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer. The ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines. The most exceptional fruit is sourced from 80-110 year old, non-grafted bush vines which are extremely low yielding. The very old vines require minimal attention. Their deep root structure means they are self-sufficient and can adapt to climatic extremes. Ebenezer has a unique soil profile. The well-drained sandy clay loam over a solid limestone pan is perfect for growing Shiraz. The soil is 'mean' and encourages deep roots which helps produce hugely concentrated wines of great character.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz speaks so clearly of the Glaetzer house style: that is to say, sleek, polished, powerful, seamless and fruit-driven. These are wines that speak of the Barossa in their earthy splay of pliable tannin, but they have a vibrance to the fruit that is most attractive. So, while these wines harness the place—this wine could hardly be from anywhere else—they do it in a restrained kind of way. Not that you could call this 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz "restrained" and get away with it. More to comment on the fact that Barossa is yoked and controlled in this wine. I like it a lot. There are notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, raspberry pastille and even pomegranate molasses, alongside sweet paprika, ironstone and red earth, roasted meat and a throw of tapenade. This is really good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2024 - 2037

96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"I feel that Ben Glaetzer's Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There's an imperious tannin structure but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It's a ripper." Drink 2023 - 2043

96/100 Vinous, Angus Hughson

"This seriously classy 2022 Amon-Ra is seamless and beautifully pitched with focus and refinement. Yet, it delivers powerful aromas of black licorice, fennel seed, and a core of blackberries dusted with star anise enriched by sweet, balanced oak. Impressive energy with a streamlined shape comes forward before building layers of sweet and savory tones. Chewy, fine tannins punctuate a finish of exceptional length. A stunning young wine that will build in bottle." Drink 2028 - 2045
