Its Origins
Once a trading village established in 1842, this remarkable place is a captivating pocket of Australia’s wine and vine history that is a must when visiting the Barossa. Owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa spans six-generations of farming, food, community and wine, Langmeil is renowned for its preservation of old vines and the making of distinguished wines from these cherished sites. At the pinnacle of its winemaking is The Freedom 1843 Shiraz, made from what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard believed planted in 1843 at the heart of this historical patch of Barossa earth.
What The Critics Say
91/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh (2018 vintage)
"Spice and chocolate, blackberry and raspberry, subtle dried herb, mint, and earthiness. Medium bodied, mixed berries, spice and a little tar, smooth mouth-coating powdery tannin, juiciness, but kind of savoury too. Finish shows some dried mint and subtle oak. Tasty."
90/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2017 vintage)
"From 10-100yo vines picked over 6 weeks, matured in used oak for 8 months. A salute to the vintage with clear, light colour, a fragrant symphony of red fruits and fine tannins."
