2022 Pegasus Bay Waipara Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albiet sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Gorgeously complex and enticing, the wine shows sweet plum, olive, dried mushroom and toasted nut aromas, leading to a silky-smooth palate that's wonderfully weighted and lingering. Splendidly framed by supple texture and finely infused tannins, finishing impressively long and plush. At its best: now to 2035. $57.00. www.pegasusbay.com. July 2024." Drink 2024 - 2035
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Intense, peppery pinot noir with black pepper, plum, black cherry and subtle tree fruit flavours. Bright, fresh, medium-bodied red with appealing energy. Should age well 19 Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2030
93/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Moderately deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full, with penetrating aromas of black cherry, plum, earth, herbs, and savoury nuances. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black cherry and plum entwined with dried thyme, liquorice roots, undergrowth and earthy elements. Supple, silky tannins reflect earth and herb details, providing a savoury frame and broadness to the palate. Lively, ripe acidity entices and carries a lengthy, elegant finish. This earthy, savoury Pinot Noir is refined and has well-balanced freshness and precision. Match with lamb roast and smoked duck over the next 8+ years. Fermented with 40% of whole bunch, cold-soaked for a week approx, natural fermentation to 13%, pressed to Burgundy oak barriques, 30% new and aged for 15 months. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) Aug 2024 RRP $57."
