2022 Squawking Magpie Gimblett Gravels Chatterer Syrah

Syrah
Its Origins
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
TOP OF THE TASTING and Gold Medal, Dish Magazine (2021 vintage)
"With its intense aromatics, generously juicy mid-palate, savoury tones and supple tannins, this stunning syrah sailed straight into the recalls and roared through the final tasting in rockstar fashion. Bold pepper, cherry, and plummy characters merge with hints of lantana and violets to create an incredibly savoury, stylish and elegantly poised syrah that seriously overdelivers in the drink-for-your-dollar stakes. Gorgeous."
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)
"Fantastic core of dark ruby and purple hues with bold, ripe and spicy aromas of black berry and black currant, purple flowers and peppery spices, toasty barrel spices of vanilla and clove. Youthful, complex and enticing. Equally bold and expressive on the palate with flavours of dark berries and peppery spices, raspberry, black currant and violets rest on a core of stony mineral qualities. Well made and ready to drink from late 2022 through 2029+. Fantastic value pricing as well."
