2022 Te Mata Bullnose Syrah

97 Points Sam Kim
In stock
An icon of great NZ Syrah from Te Mata's old vines. The Bullnose is made with the legendary commitment to balance and concentration made by possible by decades of in-house experience. Although designed to age it is already showing plush fruit and detailed spice and florals. A hell of a nice problem here: decant now or cellar?

Its Origins

Originally a farm with homestead established in 1854 by John Chambers, it was his son Bernard who, on return from travels in France, planted vineyards on its north facing hills - which are still in use. In 1919 the Chambers sold and the Te Mata Vineyards company was established, to continue until 1975 when two associates, John Buck and Michael Morris, ended their 8 year search for a winery location by purchasing on the historic Te Mata estate. By remaining firmly rooted in a kind of modern traditional approach - quality focussed wines made with long-term expertise and from estate-only vineyards - Te Mata Estate have risen and risen as New Zealand’s benchmark for cellaring quality. Depending on variety, both their middle and top end wines are consistently capable not only of balance and appeal on release, but of aging for multiple decades.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Plush and exquisite at once, this engaging syrah shows dark fruit richness, clove, floral and assorted nut aromas on the nose with a hint of dried herbs, leading to superbly weighted palate offering splendid fruit purity with sensual complexity, gorgeously framed by velvety texture and beautifully melded tannins. This is weighty, robust and sophisticated with gorgeous harmony, finishing refined and immensely satisfying. At its best: 2027 to 2042. $80.00. www.temata.co.nz. Jan 2024." Drink 2027 - 2042

96/100 Huon Hooke (2021 vintage)

"Almost glass-staining purple colour, very bright; the bouquet loaded with an amalgam of brown spice aromas, toasted nuts too, including clove, nutmeg and pepper. A powerful, concentrated and tensioned wine with bright acidity and firm but measured tannins that lead into a very long finish. Great potential here. 12 JAN 2023."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Elegance on a grand scale with power that is delivered with consummate subtlety. My kinda syrah, with plenty of energy. An almost inky red with impressive density that’s underpinned with vibrant acidity that gives the wine energy. Youthful and slightly closed now, it will respond well to careful bottle age. Drink to 2035."
