2022 Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier

Grape
Viognier
Its Origins
Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston, Barossa Valley, seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, and since 1989 the company has been run by Robert and Sam Hill Smith. Yalumba owns over 1000 acres of vineyards, as well as buying in grapes from selected growers, some of whom have been working with Yalumba over 4 generations. The winery is modern and hi-tech and is one of the very few wine companies in the world to have its own cooperage!
What The Critics Say
93/100 Excellent Cameron Douglas MS
"Lovely bouquet with striking aromatics of white fleshed stone fruits, sweet citrus and flowers. Classic too on the palate with a silky tock, flavours of white spice and apricot stone, pomaceous fruits and white nectarine. Nicely weight with a satin-cream mouthfeel, medium acidity and lengthy finish. What’s not to like! Best drinking from late 2024 through 2028+."
92/100 Huon Hooke
Light yellow hue and a spicy varietal nose with aromas of stone-fruits, a hint of honey and traces of malt, nectarine and apricot. It’s rich and full in the mouth with lots of texture and a little alcohol warmth, in balance. Dry and appetising to finish. 06 Apr 2024." Drink 2024–2029
91+/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
"It’s spicy, dry and stony. It’s textural too but not in a creamy or indeed oily way; it just has a bit of grip, its dryness exerting an impression. It tastes of stonefruit, gravel, herbs and spices; it tastes sophisticated. Another year or so in bottle won’t do it any harm." Drink 2024 - 2028
