2022 Yalumba Virgilius Viognier

96 Points James Halliday
In stock
A legendary white that is regarded by experts as a world benchmark in Viognier. Released as part of Yalumba's "Fine and Rare" range, the Virgilius label is the flagship on which they base their international reputation as Viognier experts. This fruit is still selected from the first commercial plantings of Viognier in Australia, a small plot of older vines (40+ years) on the cooler slopes of the Eden Valley which have since proved to be an ideal climate for the grape. Easily comparable to many expensive whites from Condrieu, the Yalumba Virgilius is a steal at this price!
$51.99 in mixed 6+ or $57.99 per bottle

Its Origins

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston, Barossa Valley, seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, and since 1989 the company has been run by Robert and Sam Hill Smith. Yalumba owns over 1000 acres of vineyards, as well as buying in grapes from selected growers, some of whom have been working with Yalumba over 4 generations. The winery is modern and hi-tech and is one of the very few wine companies in the world to have its own cooperage!

What The Critics Say

96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Widely considered to be the benchmark wine for the variety in Australia, the '22 release of the Yalumba Virgilius once again impresses with its texture, purity and driving line across the palate. Subtle apricot, white flowers, ginger, spice, cut fennel, crushed quartz, liminal sherbet and the quietest whisper of mountain herbs. It's in fine form with a minerally drivetrain and, within that finely focused line, a sense of latent power being held back. Having recently tried a stunning 21-year-old Virgilius at the Yalumba 175th anniversary museum tasting, I may be a bit light on the drinking window here … let's just say 2035-plus." Drink 2024 - 2035+

95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson

"I’ve set the drinking window at 2026- because this is coiled, tight and reserved, and will be so much better for the run of time. But you could of course drink this now and thoroughly enjoy the experience. It tastes of crushed fennel, apricot nectar, stones, steel, citrus and a spray of more savoury inputs, though the net impact is great than the sum of its parts. It shows great power, great restraint and great promise." Drink 2026 - 2031+

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2022 The Virgilius Viognier hails from the Eden Valley, and it delivers us a cavalcade of spring flowers, apricots, marmalade and cinnamon on buttered toast, elderflower, a hint of lychee and a flutter of yellow citrus notes. In the mouth, the wine is viscose and a little oily, and it blankets the tongue. Matured for 10 months in French oak, it is a rich, detailed wine of great length. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2022 - 2032
